Giant Number Line

giant number line

You know when you have an idea but you can't find the right tool/printable so you just make it? Yup. Me too.

As I was planning my Gr. 1/2 addition unit, I was looking for ways to encourage my students to conceptualize larger numbers - just like the large number of FUN animals in our August 2022 book 'One Blue Gnu' by Danna Smith. I couldn't find what I was looking for so I decided to make my own! My Grade 1s practiced adding animals to the number line and counting from 1 to 50+. My Grade 2s practiced compound adding as we added each group of animals. This turned into a hands-on math activity with entry points for all my students - what a win!

Be warned - this really is a GIANT number line. Certainly you could reduce it if you wanted to. I think a lot of the learning came from my students connecting all the pieces to make their number lines. It was exciting and fun and super engaging for all.

I'd love to hear how you might use this number line in your classroom!

*You'll notice that there are blank registration lines on the right hand of each portion so students can connect each piece without missing any numbers.
