Raj's Rule: September Printable

September Printable

In our class, we talked about what it means to have courage. We talked a little bit about the difference between bravery and courage and related these ideas to experiences in our own lives. Simply speaking we decided that bravery was acting without fear and courage was acting even though you felt worried or afraid. It was really interesting to see how the students could relate experiences and events in their own lives to either being brave or courageous. Oftentimes, someone’s act of bravery (crossing the monkey bars) was someone else’s act of courage!

We then went back to “Raj’s Rule (for the bathroom at school)” and re-read the book to look for examples of courage. Everyone can show courage in small ways and courage is something that is as unique as each of us. Before we created our own personal Courage Maps, we made a list of things we have done that were courageous. This was such a wonderful confidence building exercise during a time where many children are feeling worried and unsure. Here are some examples from our list:

  • Walking to school with a sibling
  • Going to the dentist
  • Sleeping over
  • Trying a new food
  • Meeting a new teacher
  • Making friends
  • Asking for help
  • Wearing a mask (yup, it made the list)

Possible Extensions:

I included a larger format of this document in tabloid size (11 x 17 in) to include space for mapping conventions (i.e., compass rose, legend, scale, etc.) Students could be encouraged to come up with symbols to represent a courageous experience or they could even write about that experience instead of drawing a picture.
